New CFLs (Compact Fluorescent  Light) can save a ton of electricity and money.  These continue to improve  with their quality of light that is looking more and more like a traditional incandescent light.

It is estimated that over the lifespan of a single CFL compared to a traditional incandescent bulb, you can save about $30 of electricity.  Yes, the CFL will cost you more to purchase, but this is minimal compared to the long-term savings.

Note: to minimize your environmental impact, do not replace your current incandescent bulbs until they have actually burned out.  The additional waste generated is not worth the savings as you can maximize your current utilization of existing materials.
